University of North Carolina at Greensboro

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is a public university with approximately 18,500 students, situated about one mile west of downtown Greensboro. In 2009, UNCG's planning processes identified the need for the University to increase the number of undergraduate students housed in University-controlled housing. The Housing Strategic Plan developed in 2009 set a goal to increase housing to 40%-50% of its undergraduates from the current level of 30%. In order to achieve this goal, UNCG has chosen to expand its campus to the south by crossing the railroad corridor and expanding into the West Lee Street Corridor.  Davenport Transportation Consulting (DTC) was retained to determine the potential traffic impact of this development and to identify transportation improvements that may be required to accommodate the impact of both background traffic and new development traffic during each studied phase. This study involved on-site review of the study area, vehicular and pedestrian traffic data collection, cursory review of available information including the High Point Road/Lee Street Corridor Plan, pedestrian and parking accommodations, and analysis of three (3) separate phases of this development: Phase 1 (2012), Phase 2 (2015) and Full Build (2020). DTC identified all areas of deficiency and made recommendations for improvements where necessary. The recommendations addressed vehicular and pedestrian traffic, especially along Lee Street within the study limits, and parking accommodation as it relates to this development.
