Traffic Assessment for Uwharrie Environmental Landfill Expansion Project, Mount Gilead, NC
Republic Service of NC contracted with DTC to perform a traffic assessment for the proposed expansion of the landfill located in Mount Gilead (Montgomery County) NC. This facility was a municipal solid waste (MSW) facility and it accepted waste from all over the region. The proposed expansion was projected to generate 110 more truck trips per day within five years. No new driveway accesses were proposed for the project. The hours of operation were 6 AM - 5 PM M-F and 7 AM - 12 PM on Saturday. DTC's study found that the expansion of this landfill was expected to have only a minimal impact on the transportation system. There was adequate capacity on all study intersections and roadway segments. In addition, the crash data did not indicate that there were any major areas of concern. There were no significant safety issues at this location. It was noted that Landfill Road (SR 1137) might need to be resurfaced between the main entrance and NC 24/27 based on DTC's site investigation, but this was ultimately to be determined by NCDOT.
