FedEx Ground Transportation Hub, Kernersville, NC
In 2008 DTC was contracted to perform transportation impact study for the proposed FedEx transportation hub on a significant portion of the Triad Business Park located off West Market Street and South Bunker Hill Road in Guilford County, NC. The FedEx hub is projected to have approximately 500,000 square feet and is proposed to be developed over a period of 16 years. Fourteen intersections were included in the study, including Interstate 40 ramps. These intersections were analyzed for the scenarios of existing and future conditions, including three phases of development. Detailed traffic projections were provided by the client. This information was utilized, along with the ITE Trip Generation Manual to determine the projected trips for the phases of development. The analysis was conducted based on NCDOT standards. Recommendations for roadway and signal improvements were made that will mitigate the impact of this project, as well as the business park. Additionally, NCDOT TIP projects U-2800 includes improvements to the Old Greensboro Road at Mountain Street intersection and the Business I-40 eastbound interchange that are a part of this study. DTC recommended that these improvements be accelerated to provide adequate capacity by the planned Phase I completion of the project. Many of the recommendations along Sandy Ridge Road go beyond the responsibility of any single developer, and could reasonably be considered improvements that would be constructed as a public project.
This development will be a major engine for economic growth of this area. A development of this size, coupled with the adjacent Triad Business Park will provide many jobs. DTC's assessment of this project as it relates to traffic is that with the implementation of the recommended improvements, this project should not significantly degrade mobility within the study area.
