TITLE: ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN
LOCATION: Richmond, VA and Asheville, NC
DEPARTMENT: Traffic Engineering

Job Purpose

The Engineering Technician will provide assistance to the team in quality engineering design and traffic services for rehabilitation, renovation and construction of assigned projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaboration with team members, clients and agencies;

  • Collection, organization, research and analysis of project data;

  • Field visits and data collection;

Assist team members with any or all of the following:

  • Providing design and drafting services for the roadway design team for the conceptual, preliminary and detail design phases of a project;

  • Collection, organization, research and analysis of project data;

  • Field visits and data collection;

  • Traffic engineering analysis including impact studies, corridor studies, capacity and safety analyses, multi-modal operation studies, traffic simulations and planning studies;

  • Plan preparation for signal design or roadway design projects;

  • Design calculations;

  • Report writing;

  • Preparing design drawings in accordance with various federal, state, and municipal standards governing the design of roads, intersections, sidewalks, multi-use paths, etc.;

  • Preparing design drawings using AutoCAD, Civil3D, MicroStation, Geopak, Corridor Modeler and/or similar type software;

  • Preparing opinion of construction cost estimates;

  • Supporting project management and client interactions;

  • Introduction and training¬†of AutoCAD, MicroStation and/or other computer based design packages.

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in Civil Engineering program or other relevant major;

  • Desire to work in roadway design and/or traffic planning field;

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in civil or road engineering;

  • Good knowledge of AutoCAD, MicroStation and/or knowledge of traffic

    engineering and planning software (HCS, Synchro, TransModeler, VISSIM,

    ArcGIS).

Demonstrated Abilities

  • Ability to make informed independent and professional judgments.

  • Professional verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. without assistance.

  • Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions.
