DAVENPORT provided transportation engineering services as a sub-consultant on this project which included the provision of operational and safety improvements to the West 5th Street and Tyson Street/West 14th Avenue intersection. The intersection improvement project will involve conversion of the northern and southern intersection roadways, which are currently offset and signalized, with a roundabout intersection design.
DAVENPORT’s scope of work included a transportation impact analysis, concept designs, preliminary designs, transportation management plan, and pavement marking and signing plans.
The transportation impact analysis evaluated three scenarios including a realigned signalized intersection, a realigned un-signalized intersection and a roundabout intersection design. Based on safety, capacity and operational comparisons of the three alternatives, the modern roundabout was the preferred option. DAVENPORT developed several conceptual designs for the proposed roundabout intersection design working closely with City of Greenville staff. Multiple control points were identified and factored into the design to minimize impacts to right of way and adjacent properties. DAVENPORT prepared the final horizontal roadway geometry plans, transportation management plans, and pavement marking and signing plans for inclusion in the overall project.
