Monmouth Street Sidewalk Design
Project Description

The City of Winston-Salem retained DAVENPORT to improve Monmouth Street between Lexington Road and Dacian Street by designing a curb and gutter section with 2000’ of sidewalk. Designing a curb and gutter section and sidewalk on an existing urbanized area with multiple driveways and utilities was challenging for the team. It required our team to work with the existing pavement section to minimize impact to adjacent properties. In addition, the cross slope of the parking areas did not follow the general slope of the roadway and several retaining walls extended almost to the existing street. These conditions would not allow for the typical sub and sidewalk cross section installation without significant modifications to the existing parking areas and the addition of small retaining walls between the parking lots. Our team worked closely with the City of Winston-Salem to modify standards to minimize the construction impacts while maintaining the overall concept. The design team had a short time frame to complete the project. DAVENPORT worked with the city staff as well as its sub-consultant to produce a set of plans on time and within budget.
